A Friday adventure
A Message from Mark
This past week presented many challenges for Whatcom County with the flooding. However, one value stands strong regardless of the trials: our solid community connections.
Due to flooding over many roads, schools in the Mount Baker District were closed on Thursday, and Wild Bird was unable to make our food bag delivery to the 219 kids who look forward to a weekend with less food scarcity. When I discovered Friday morning that the schools would be open, I arranged to rent the delivery truck and hit the road.
Schools on the route included Acme, Harmony, and Kendall elementary schools, plus Mount Baker JH./HS. There was a certain amount of trepidation while driving in areas close to the river. Along the drive, I saw some of the destruction and dangers our county is up against. I also saw the positive impact this resilient community has long been known for – people helping people. Solutions don’t just happen by accident. When entire communities come together, we all succeed.
You are a big part of Wild Bird’s success and outreach. When you share our story of providing weekend food bags to local school kids, you strengthen our connections. Community isn’t just a place; it’s the trust, generosity and partnerships we share. On behalf of the children we serve and our volunteers, I thank you for the impact you have and continue to make in the lives of many in need.
Every gesture makes a difference … ”because hunger doesn’t take the weekend off!”
With gratitude, Mark Moder, Executive Director
PS – Last week, our board of directors approved extending Wild Bird’s outreach from the previous record of 43 schools/pre-schools and 1,200 food bags. We now serve 50 sites and deliver almost 1,400 food bags EACH week!
