Through the eyes of a child
How lovely would it be to see the world through a child’s eyes, meeting each day with simple wonder, trust, and curiosity. This week, one of our Wild Bird volunteers experienced just that while dropping off a bin of weekend food bags at a local school.
Here is her story.
“As we pulled up, a child at the doors of the school ran up to me and exclaimed, “Are you the Wild Bird Lady?” She then asked to help with a twinkle in her eyes and proudly stated that she received one of our bags each week. It was a wonderful, brief conversation that touched my heart and confirmed that food bags do make a difference. As I reflect back on that lovely moment, I can imagine the faces of all the other children just like her. Each holding a bag; a symbol of nourishment that says people care.” ~ Sharry Nyberg
Each one of us has the opportunity to be seen as “The Wild Bird Lady.” Whether you pack the food bags, deliver bins to one of the 49 Whatcom County schools, or contribute financially, you get to share in that title. We have three more weeks of sending kids home on the weekend with food that makes a difference for them and their families. Yet our work doesn’t stop when the final school bell rings.
Over the summer months, volunteers continue to raise funds and create opportunities in preparation for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year. And this summer, for the first time, we can provide two preschools with bags all summer long. It’s not easy. Wild Bird does not receive state or federal funds. We rely solely on community support to purchase the food for 1,350 bags EACH week.
Let’s work together to keep a bright and trusting light in the eyes of every child in need…"because hunger doesn’t take the weekend off!”
Warm regards,
